Vulcanite
Volcanic lava is
quarried in blocks and cut into 16x25to
36x25 slab tiles. Each piece of Vulcanite is fired twice at over
2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The first firing stabilizes the stone dimensionally.
The second firing fuses the glaze to the stone. A variety of textures and
finishes can be produced, from high gloss to matte glazes of the Arts and
Crafts style to rough surfaces that look like concrete. Vulcanite is available
in 20 standard colors: however, over 200 shades and colors are available on
a custom order basis.
The rich transparent glazes have a great depth of color. All glaze finishes
develop some form of crazing. Crazing is more apparent in the gloss glazes
than the matte and concrete types. Crazing
will continue to increase during the first years use.
Vulcanite is made to order. Lead time is 3 to 4 weeks for the 20 standard colors and 8 weeks for custom colors. There is a 25% up-charge for custom colors. All orders are shipped F.O.B. from San Jose, California.
