Glaze Information

Fireclay Tile uses it's own glazes in the production of all its tiles. Some glazes are mixed from a variety of pre-manufacured non-leaded frits, other are raw glazes manufactured from oxides and other raw earth materials. Fireclay Tile glazes are produced without the use of lead.

Our glaze applications are categorized by series and techniques: Chateau, Colonia, Vitrail (Velvet Matte and Patine are sub-series of Vitrail), and our new Debris series, as well as our Rubbed and Multicolor techniques.

We carefully weigh each ingredient of the glaze formula to the tenth of a gram to assure consistency. All glazes are tested prior to production.

If we are so accurate with our glaze production and application processes, then why do the glaze colors vary? High-fired ceramic products vary because of the firing differences in the kiln. If the day is cloudy and the barometric pressure is high, the kiln will fire differently than it does on a clear sunny day. Many beige and light peach and pink glazes are greatly effected by small variations in the kiln firing. More information on color variation can be found in the links above.

The old world firing methods we use give our glazes tremendous depth of color. The richness and character of our glazes cannot be achieved through modern day mass production means. Each order has its own unique character.

Please inquire about the characteristics of the glazed tile you are ordering. More information is included in the series information (links above).
